Radio-frequency technique

RF ablation technique has had very significant result in medicine and treatment, including the ablation of tumors of the liver, lung, bone, etc.
This method is also used for treating uterine fibroids.

Uterine fibroids

These are benign tumors with vascular tissue and are of a non-cancerous nature. Although they benign, they can cause pelvic pain and severe bleeding.
In some cases, they can affect fertility.

Radio-frequency of uterine fibroids

Radio-frequency ablation of fibroid tissue is a minimally invasive procedure. This method can be a suitable substitute for fibroid surgery because it has fewer side effects and leads to very good results for the patient.

How is this surgery performed?

In this method, first, the patient will be carefully examined by imaging to determine whether or not this procedure is appropriate for him/her. After determining the location of fibroids through ultrasound, a special electrode will be inserted into the fibroids through the skin and the inner lining of the fibroids will be ablated via radio waves. This surgery will be performed under anesthesia in about 10 to 15 minutes. The patient will be discharges 2 to 3 hours after the surgery and 48 hours after that, the patient will be able to carry out the daily activities.

Preparations for RFA surgery of uterine fibroids

– Pre-oprative fasting about 6 hours before the surgery
– Having the patients medical records and blood coagulation test result
– Having a companion for doing the paperworks
– Taking shower and shaving the surgical area

Uterine fibroids recurrence after the treatment

Given  the size of uterine fibroids, the whole lesion may not be ablated in one session and an additional session may be required.
This surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis and the patient will be discharged after 3 to 4 hours.
Depending on the patients condition, he/she may require hospitalization for 24 hours.
After the surgery, the patient feels pain in the uterus, which is normal for up to 48 hours.
The patient should attend the clinic one month after the surgery for control and check-up so that the surgery result would be reviewed.
